Sunlight warmed his pale face. He soaked the light up and sighed in satisfaction. Slowly he opened his eyes and saw the purest blue he had ever seen. He chuckled a bit, that was a lie. He’d seen purer…he just couldn’t place his finger on where…or when he had. He just knew he had. This blue was nothing compared to it, ordinary even. But the fluffy cotton candy clouds that drifted past with the gentle breeze still painted a picturesque scene.

The grass beneath him was soft, too soft almost. It didn’t seem real. He dug his fingers into the strands of green a simple pleasure but one he couldn’t help but indulge in. For some reason the fact that both hands felt the same lovely texture mattered to him. “You’re so quiet today, Vincent.” A soft voice said. Turning his head he saw the ever lovely Lucrecia staring down at him with a gentle smile.

“I’m just enjoying the moment.” Vincent said smiling back at the beautiful woman.

Lucrecia laughed a little. “Well I’m glad you’re enjoying it.” She bent down and placed a tender kiss on his lips. Vincent could have sworn that he was soaring through those ridiculously poufy clouds above him. He had longed to have Lucrecia return his feelings for so long…It was everything he had ever wanted. The day couldn’t get more perfect. And yet…he wasn’t as happy as he knew he should be. Something was missing.

Lucrecia pulled away a strange look on her face that Vincent couldn’t place. “What’s the matter, Vincent? Aren’t you happy?”

Vincent smiled again but it didn’t feel quite right. “I feel…like I’m forgetting something…” He said sitting up and running a hand through his short black hair. “It’s so strange…like this is all a dream almost.” He laughed a bit at himself. Lucrecia didn’t laugh.

“Vincent…don’t you love me?”

Vincent almost felt his heart shatter. What kind of a question was that?! Everyone knew that he’d loved her since he first saw her. But then why hadn’t he answered already…he was hesitating. Why? “Something’s missing…” He muttered glancing up at the blue sky. He felt the inexplicable urge to cry. Vincent Valentine didn’t cry. Suddenly he turned to Lucrecia “This isn’t right.” He declared. He knew it wasn’t right.

It just couldn’t be right. He had lost something important and this little hill with Lucrecia was…hard to explain. It was what he had always wanted, but it was suddenly not enough. Lucrecia surprised him by smiling. “Good for you, Vincent. I was starting to get worried you’d never move on.”

Vincent frowned. What? “What is this?” He asked looking around at the perfect scene around him. “This isn’t real.”

Wake up…please wake up…

Vincent looked around. That voice…it was so familiar. It made the shattered feeling in his heart melt away, but the broken tone the words carried made him want to cry all over again. But he couldn’t remember why that deep rumble of a voice was so important. “Who-”

Damn it Vin…I need you.

“Cid.” Suddenly the scene shattered around him, the sky falling like glass and the grass withering away to nothingness. Lucrecia kissed Vincent’s cheek as he floated in a sudden endless darkness. “Goodbye Vincent.” She whispered in his ear as he slowly felt the weight of his body again.

He could feel the hardness of the mattress, the scratch of the second rate hotel’s sheets, and he could feel the familiar calluses on the hands that was holding his own. Slowly he forced his deep red eyes to open. Cid was sitting next to the bed just like Vincent knew he would be. Hand clutched in his, eyes bloodshot and an untouched cigarette behind his ear. “Chief.”

Cid looked up instantly. The moment their eyes met the tension drained out of the pilot’s eyes. That was the purest blue Vincent had ever seen. “Vin! God…I thought I fuckin’ lost ya. Don’t ever do that ta me again, Vin!” Cid ordered dropping Vincent’s hand to hug the gunner’s sore body. It took a moment but Vincent slowly remembered how he had ended up being black and blue. The latest fight hadn’t gone well…Cid had been knocked into a tree and Vincent had stepped in front of the rampaging beast without thinking. “Damn it Vin ya know how close Tifa said ya were ta dying?!”

Vincent smiled a bit. “Yeah, Cid…I know.” Cid stopped mid rant to look down at the gunner in confusion. “It was beautiful…nice weather, I wasn’t a monster…Lucrecia was there too…”

Cid looked away slightly. “Then why…”

“There’s a downside too…” Vincent said lifting his hand to force Cid to look at him again. “When I was there…I couldn’t remember you…and heaven’s just not enough without you there.” Vincent pulled Cid down and gently kissed the shocked blonde. It took a minute but Cid responded, crushing their mouths closer together while his arms wrapped around Vincent’s waist.

Vincent soaked in the feeling of Cid’s mouth against his. No…this was heaven…and it was enough.
My first Valenwind ficwith a healthy dose of VincentxLucrecia to boot...uh...this was inspired by the song "Heaven's Not Enough" by Steve Conte. I love that song ever since I first heard it...

Oh YAOI in case that's not obvious by the 'Valenwind' up there...I've gotten burned for writing Yaoi before so call me paranoid...
